THE GOOD GOVERNANCE SERIES: DO YOU KNOW THE OFFICE OF THE CITIZEN?

By Nnabugwu Chizoba

A popular axiom stresses it that it is what we see that we get. Going by this simple but age long expressed axiom, one is inspired to note that in a Democratic Governance system which Nigeria adopted and is also practicing there is need to look into the Office of the Citizen to among other things seek to know what the office truly is and what we are seeing. Let us begin the process.

ISUIKWUATO NDI NWANNEUKWU, KNOW THE APPOINTED LEADERS OF THE COUNCIL, AND ELEVATE OFFICE OF THE CITIZEN THROUGH ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP PARTICIPATION AND MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENTS

By Nnabugwu Chizoba

It is no news that Abia State did not have elected Local Government Chairmen in the 17 local Government Councils at the time Dr. Alex Otti was sworn in as the elected Governor of Abia State. Aware of the enormous task ahead of him and the administration he represents in Abia state, and very confident of the place of the local government in the delivery of democracy dividends and development of the state generally, he appointed credible people to man the affairs of each of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Abia State pending the time election is conducted to elect people into office at the 17 local government Councils. The head, Executive of each of the 17 Councils and their Deputies were named by the Governor, Dr Alex Otti as Mayors and Deputy Mayors respectively.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MY BRETHREN IN THE "SOUTH-SOUTH"

By Donald Ekpo, Akwa Ibom State

"For as long as the Old Eastern region remain in disarray and not united, self-determination of the region will remain impossible." ~ An anonymous retired Nigerian Army Chief

The word South-South, even though it may sound absurd, is a name we have come to accept as a people. We cant say exactly how we came about to be identified with the name neither can we say exactly when we were given the name, but we just know it is our name. While growing up back in the days, geography taught us about the North, the South, The East and The West. For proper definition of locations, we were also told about The Northwest, NorthEast, Southwest and SouthEast I cant remember anything like the NorthNorth, SouthSouth, EastEast or Westwest , but here I am today, writing a letter to my South-South brethren. That is what happens to a people that are not in control of their Cultural Development or the Political and Economic Future.

THE SUNDAY SPECIAL: APPEASEMENT AND THE APPEASERS

Dear All,

Is it possible that most appeasers and chronic defenders of obnoxious, rascal and dented actions of political office holders of yesterday are gradually going into oblivion, their enthusiasm waning and discomfort taking over?

OPINION: OFFICE OF THE SON AND THE DAUGHTER OF MR. PRESIDENT, GOVERNORS, LOCAL GOVERNMENT CHAIRMEN AND OTHERS NOW A MUST HAVE

Chief Obafemi Awolowo - Former Premier Western Region

Recently, the Son of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, made history as he beats the sons of former Presidents when he attended the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Aso Rock Villa and earned or created for himself, and for the good, wellbeing and betterment of the nation the well-deserved office of the Son of the President. By that singular move he broke a record.

TEXT OF THE 2023 DEMOCRACY DAY NATIONAL BROADCAST

copied picture from the internet

*TEXT OF DEMOCRACY DAY NATIONAL BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU, GCFR ON JUNE 12, 2023*

Fellow Nigerians,

2. It is exactly three decades today that Nigerians went to the polls to exercise their inalienable right to elect a President of their choice to lead the transition from military dictatorship to a representative government of the people.

3. The abortion, by military fiat, of the decisive victory of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, up to that time, the fairest and freest election in the country’s political evolution, turned out, ironically, to be the seed that germinated into the prolonged struggle that gave birth to the democracy we currently enjoy since 1999.

4. In rising to strongly oppose the arbitrary annulment of the will of the majority of Nigerians as expressed in that historic election, the substantial number of our people who participated in the struggle to de-annul the election signified their fierce commitment to enthroning democracy as a form of government that best ennobles the liberty, the dignity of the individual and the integrity as well as the stability of the polity. The fierce opposition to the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election and the unrelenting pro-democracy onslaught it unleashed was the equivalent of the battle against colonial rule by our founding fathers that resulted in the gaining of Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

OPEN LETTER: 2023 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION: NDI ABIA, LET THE CELEBRATION STOP AT LEAST FOR NOW

Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, Governor Elect Abia State

The heading of this piece suggests to a large extent that this letter is addressed to Ndi Abia as a whole. If this is your understanding of the caption, I just hope that I have not disappointed you, and in view of this, seek your pardon in the event that you feel I have deceived you. With this appeal in mind, I now feel comfortable to flow in the manner represented below:

BREAKING: GOODLUCK JONATHAN EXPRESSES INTEREST IN 2019

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has declared his interest to run for presidency in 2019 in Bayelsa State today. A jubilant crowd erupted as news leaked that the former president would be holding a press briefing this afternoon.
“In a statement released by his media secretary, the former president said, he has been inundated with calls from famous Nigerians to reconsider and salvage the economy from the current decay under the APC led government.
The statement reads in part: “A while ago I stood at the Eagle Square, to offer myself for election as the President of our beloved country on the platform of our great party; the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I decided to run for office because of the many troubles our dear country faced.
“In a hotly contested election, we ‘lost’ the election to the opposition. We would have rejected the election results but decided my personal ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.
“I made it clear then that when I leave office, Nigerians will understand the freedom they enjoyed under my administration. Are my I saint? Certainly not. Were my Ministers saints? Certainly not. But the opposition have unleashed untold hardship on Nigerians.

NIGERIA AND INDIA'S DEVELOPMENT

The biggest country in Africa that the United Kingdom colonized is Nigeria. The biggest country that the United Kingdom colonized in Asia is India (which then comprised the present Pakistan and Bangladesh). When the UK came into Nigeria and India, like all other countries they colonized, they brought along their technology, religion (Christianity), and culture: names, dressing, food, language, etc.

FEW OF THE MANY FACES OF IGNORANCE

The judge asked the killer of former Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, "Why did you kill Sadat?"

He said to him, "Because he is secular!"

The judge replied: "What does secular mean?"

The killer said: "I don't know!"

In the case of the attempted assassination of the late Egyptian writer, Naguib Mahfouz,  the judge asked the man who stabbed Naguib Mahfouz, "Why did you stab him?"
