FALSE ACCUSATION: “PERSONALLY, I THINK FALSE ACCUSATION IS VERY BAD”—MR. HARRY, REACTS

By: Nnabugwu Chizoba,

False accusations are allegations or claims of wrong doing levelled against a person(s), group(s), institution(s), government(s), community (ies), state(s) or nation(s), which are not true.

Investigations conducted by Scoreline reveal that false accusations are not limited to a particular segment of the society. They are also not confined to a particular age bracket, religion or sex. On the issues that people have been accused of, or can be accused of, even; when, where and what, and by whom? They are also diverse, unending and mind bugging equally.

People at the lower echelon of the society, the so called downtrodden, lay claim to the fact that they are the most affected on issues of false accusations. However, investigation by Scoreline reveals that members of the upper chamber, the high and mighty, strongly believe that they rank very high in the falsely accused persons list, thus, they constitute higher percentage of casualties of false accusation by their own calculation and assessment.

Bothered by the spate of false accusation cases in the society, Scoreline in 2025 decided to step up efforts in its activities regarding false accusations, and is therefore, digging more into the area, aware, essentially, the implications of false accusation to relationship building, connectivity and bonding among people, communities, businesses, in addition to its consequences to development of the society.

Scoreline kick-started its journey into issues of false accusation with a discussion it held with a young Man, Mr. Harry (not the real name). Harry shared his story of false accusation, but would not want his real name revealed to avoid family issues. Mr. Harry quipped, “Personally, I think false accusation is very bad”. He led Scoreline to what gave rise to this assertion, saying “A personal experience I had when I was in the third grade in school informed my position on this matter”. Continuing, Harry gave further insight on the issue, when he said, “The person that accused me is my own sister”. On this note he requested that his name as the accused person in this story should not be revealed.

“I was accused by a family member. Actually, what happened is this, “When I was going to school, like other students, I was given a matrass by my parents”. According to Harry, “Something unfortunate happened during a break, when the school was not in session. Since the school was on break, I went home, and waited for the school to resume. During this break my room was boggled and the matrass stolen. I had no option than to break the news to my parents. I was forced back home to my parents by the ugly incident, to at least report the matter to them.

“I told my parents the matrass was stolen. Surprisingly, they didn’t believe me. As terrible as it could be, my sister went as far as saying I sold the matrass. I did not know where this was coming from. I could not imagine such an insinuation. There was really no reason for such at all. I felt really terrible that night. That my own sister could not believe me, but instead concluded that I sold the matrass was something I could not just understand. At some point I had a feeling of resentment. I felt that I was being rejected by my own family, for what I don’t know.

“I could not understand why my sister, my own blood line could disbelieve me, could doubt me on a matter as heavy as stealing. Though the matter was resolved, I still find it difficult to put my finger on anything that led to that accusation. I felt at a point, and truth be told, I still feel same, that if this could happen, may be one day something more terrible could happen, and at that point she will not stand for me.

“I don’t know how to say it and people will understand. It was not a case of wanting my sister to cover up for me on an offence that I committed or something that I did, but to believe me, if she could not fight for me. Get it right, this was something I was not even around, not close to the scene of the incident, yet she could not believe me. I surely felt unloved, maltreated and abandoned. It was not a good thing, not an experience to remember. False Accusation is really a very bad thing!”

When Scoreline observed the way he was going, becoming more emotional and hysterical, Harry was asked to suggest what he expected would have happened instead of the perceived very wrong approach of the sister and the parents that also disbelieved him.

“The need to investigate every situation properly can never be compensated by anything else” Harry was emphatic in his response. Misunderstandings, disagreements, disputes or conflicts associated with loss of valuables, misplacement of such items and the likes, by whatever name called that the situation represents, proper investigations must be conducted. People must learn to hold back, to chew their words and conduct investigations; I mean proper investigation, Harry added.

“This obviously includes giving the accused opportunity to explain or rather to give his/her account of the situation and respecting and not molesting the person. People must understand that the feelings and emotions of the accused are always involved in all issues of false accusation. This basic requirement is fundamental and paramount in handling accusation cases. Harry concluded.

Reports of people that have been physically molested and socially and psychologically battered, due largely to issues associated with poor handling of accusation cases abound. The spiritually aware and those that are conversant with emotional issues and the injuries thereof understand better the idea that Scoreline is trying to communicate across. The consequences of jumping into conclusions before proper investigations are commenced and concluded are enormous.

Scoreline is saying, until you get your facts right, your actions may be erratic and irrational at best. The advice is to follow always the path of honour. Therefore, bear it in mind that whenever you are confronted with issues that have something to do with accusation, you owe the person or persons involved the duty of care and protection from both physical and emotional harms and injuries. Learn to tread with caution. Be patient and always avoid being rash and jumping into conclusions. Commit always to following the due processes involved in unravelling the unknown. The benefits are huge, worth waiting for. Try it.

Scoreline encourages its esteemed reader to join forces with the platform, so that collectively the efforts at seeking drastic reduction and lasting approaches to sustaining the efforts can be identified.
