DANCE, THE OPPORTUNITY CREATOR FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT THAT IGNORANCE OF THE ELITE IS STIFLING

PDAM: a dance group in Jos, Plateau state, on stage

Interesting, special and unique, passion driven and impact oriented are some of the emotions that followers and admirers of dance, a serious job creation and wealth generation instrument that has been deliberately and seriously neglected, abandoned and seemingly rejected in Nigeria for years. The fact that dance is under the big umbrella of entertainment and a major component of the constantly rising creative industry did not change this narrative.

The uniqueness of dance can be seen in the creative way and manner it mirrors affairs of the society, checkmates some of the excesses and advances a new direction for the society. Dancers communicate through the stories they tell in their performances. The stories are both historical and current; physical, philosophical and spiritual. The focus, penetration and impact may differ from time to time, but are targeted objectively to benefit the larger society always. Whether it is a story for the fickle minded, ,is serious or mild, spiritual, cultural or contemporary, fact remains that creative directors see and do things that are ahead of the society through their dancers .

Societies that recognize and develop the creative industry take very serious the messages delivered by the creative directors through their dancers and for this reason work far ahead of other societies. Societies that decide to do otherwise do so at their own peril and suffer the consequences.

A simple dash, followed by what the ignoramus may consider a naughty or at most a funny movement of some parts of the dancer body, may be revealing of situations and conditions of life that are palatable or injurious, which occurred in the land or in a faraway land in the past or may occur in the present or later in the future that may make or mar the life of a community, somebody, persons or groups or help to build or destroy.

Likes attract likes is a popular axiomatic expression. Followers and admirers of creative artists may not be same with those attracted by lawyers, accountants and the likes. Different professions have their role in the society. They are each on a call to serve the society; none should be neglected, as much as possible efforts should be concentrated on encouraging and supporting different skills in people and importantly monitoring to ensure conformity with the norms.

A mere steady look by a dancer performing on stage, may translate to a quick reflexive action, a deep feeling of concern and a call for action by a truly elect watching the dance. Stopping suddenly and staring at the consumers (watchers) of their unique product (dance) by a dancer may deliver a sensitive message that touches very deep on the activities, roles and actions of men and women, and the next move in their performance may be a warning. A major function, a responsibility of sort, essentially, of dance and the dancers is "storytelling".

Dance sometimes is presented as a comprehensive narrative, in which case the dancers in their performance proffer solution to a nagging issue, communicate hope and/or offer support, reveal a gap in handling issues, such that may enable parties involved in a conflict to make amends, to douse tension and to build stronger relationships and create a more sustainable pattern that may enable disputing parties to live an environment, community or locality with a more elaborate approach to resolving the issue, thus, creating more positive energy and emotions.
