POLO: SHARPENING OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE GAME CONTINUES

In case you are just joining us on this Platform, you are welcome. We wish to inform  you also that the promotion of knowledge and understanding of Polo through this Platform is the latest addition to our operations in 2024.

Beyond entertainment and fun, the objective of the effort (promotion of Polo Sport) is job creation and wealth generation. Thus, the effort is geared wholly at opening up the economic space through awareness creation, sensitization and re-orientation of the public on the sport Polo, and to also entertain the people and create fun. After all, all works and no play make Jack a dull boy. On a lighter mood.

Presented below is a brief summary of the things a beginner needs to be abreast of as we embark on the process of trying to build the knowledge and understanding of the reader, especially those that know next to nothing about the Sport.

• The length of a standard Polo ground is 300 yards and the width is 200 yards approximately. There are also those who put this measurement at 300 yards long by 160 yards wide
• There are 4 players in each Polo team
  
• The object of the game is to score goal. This is achieved by moving the ball down the field and hitting it (the ball) through the goal post.
• A Polo ground is approximately the equivalent of 9 Football pitches. This is by those that put the measurement at 300 yards length and the width at 200. Those that represent it as 300 yards long by 160 yards wide say it is the size of 10 football fields
  
• Chukker – the period of play in Polo. You can liken it to the first and second halves in the game of football, but in the case of Polo there are between 4 and 6 Chukkers in a game.
• Action - This is the movement of the legs of a horse
  
• Aid – refers to an instruction, sign, signal or command issued to a horse requiring it to carry out an action or perform a task, such as: move to a spot or direction, halt, turn, march in a particular way or manner,
• Appealing - Claims made by the Polo players to the umpire insinuating that a foul has been committed against their team. This is expressed by raising the mallets above the players head.
  
• Aged - Refers to a horse of at least 15 years of age
