THE OFFICE: ENHANCED UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IT IS BY THE MSMEs IS VITAL FOR EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT OPERATIONS OF THE BUSINESS OF THE MSMEs

By Nnabugwu Chizoba

The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), particularly those at the Micro and Small scale categories, desirous of growing their business at sustainable level are the target of this Platform always. Their success and total transformation is our preoccupation. This can only be achieved through proper grooming. Thus, this piece seeks to unveil some salient issues about the office that MSMEs need to note, embrace and apply regularly to strengthen their operations.

First and foremost the MSMEs must take cognizance of the fact that: An office is a public place. This holds true, be it a public or a private owned office. Location, size, status, sex of the owner and nature of business, number of degrees or professional certificates acquired is not the issue here, instead the MSMEs must bear in mind that what they have and operate is an office like any other and that must be treated with respect and dignity, because it is no less a place.

In addition to the above, the MSMEs must underscore the fact that the Office can be viewed as:

  • A Place
  • A Position

When viewed as a place, it is where the functions of the occupant of the office are directed from, carried out, transacted or performed to achieve the goals and objectives of setting up, creating, establishing or opening the office. Essentially, Offices are opened for different purposes, reasons or objectives. Each office has unique functions, which are systematically and strategically directed at attending to people’s needs and in line with meeting the purpose for which the office is created.

When an office is viewed as a position, the focus, commitment or attention typically is on the job: the work or task that is performed by the occupant of the office to ensure that the system operates in a smooth and successful manner.

An office therefore, is a position of authority, and a place where specific kinds of jobs, businesses, functions and other valuable exchange services of money or money’s worth are conducted, executed, transacted or carried out in fulfillment of the bargain an office is saddled with in the chain of economic activities occurring in an environment.

It is in order if MSMEs regard their office as the directing center, headquarter or power house of their enterprise and treat activities and instructions that emanate from it as such.

In subsequent publications we shall deal with office procedures and all other relevant issues associated with the office.

Before signing off, the understanding by the MSMEs that an office is a public place as already pointed out is crucial to achieving the goals and objectives of an office.

MSMEs interested in journeying with us on our self-imposed mandate of changing the not so palatable narratives of the MSMEs in Nigeria are enjoined to follow us on this Platform bomber to bomber. The way forward is to demonstrate clearly and consistently, understanding of the lessons garnered or acquired reading this piece and others on this Platform. It is expected that you show practically, systematically and strategically what you learnt. The idea is to be deliberate in your application of the lessons. Use the lessons learnt as guide to your activities as MSMEs, start-ups and intenders (those intending or wishing to go in business).

MSMEs must therefore, at all times devote their efforts, attention and commitment on running the office for what it is, a place devoid of all forms of sentiments, but instead focusing diligently on meeting the need of the office and the requirements of her customers/clients: delighting not just satisfying them, but delivering the services, duties, responsibilities and functions of the office in a unique, surprising and enticing manner.

This foregoing is a basic or fundamental requirement for MSMEs that desire to excel, meandering successfully through daily hassles and business challenges, and become ripened to migrate or transit from enterprising people to big time business operators and successful entrepreneurs contributing significantly to the collective efforts to grow the economy of Nigeria, and move it far away from a beggarly, aid dependent and poverty stricken economy to a self-sustaining, self-reliant and self-sufficient one.
