Standing where the first picture is taken at the Ancient Afizere settlement you are positioned to have a very excellent view of Shere Hills.
Shere Hills is reputed as the highest peak on the Plateau, with over 6000ft above the sea level. It is located in Plateau State, in the North Central Region of Nigeria.
The name Shere is a community name of one of the clans that makes up the Afizere Nation. Before the advent of the Colonial masters the Afizere people as history has it lived on the Hills, and use the level lands for farming purposes and retreat as soon as they were done with their farming. Till date in Shere District, there is a village known as Ridem village that is living on the hills.
The Europeans were aware, in the of the location of Shere District many years ago. This is evidently clear as history about the area reveals. Oral records show that the Europeans interface with the areas predate Nigeria’s independence of 1960.
More than a Century ago (over 100 years) the Europeans had identified with the Shere environment and had interacted with the area for economic reasons. This can be seen from presence of the relics of their communication base seated on top of Shere hills, and has been there for a period of more than 100 years at least.
