The conference reported here as emotion soaked was the last that Dr Mrs Gloria L. Kwashi, would preside as the President, after doing so for over 31 years, during the Episcopacy of her husband, Most Rev Dr Benjamin Kwashi. Attendance at the event was massive. Women, including those that have enrolled into the Mothers Union and Women’s Guild in the past, graced the occasion that was well attended by the new members. Both categories (old and new) appeared in their separate uniforms.

Mrs Nnabugwu Ngozi, Mrs Jineme Nkeiruka, and other Women that enrolled into the Mothers Union category appeared at the conference with the Mothers Union uniform, the colourful, Blue dominated wrapper with a white blouse to match.

Mrs Lilian Eke and others in the Women’s Guild category, filed out in their glittering Green colour dominated wrapper with a white blouse to match also.

According to report available to us, the Mothers Union is an initiative of Mary Elizabeth Heywood, born on 31st December 1828. The Union was founded in 1876 when Mary gathered together a group of mothers from all sections of the community and put before them the idea of meeting together to help one another, and in particular to do more in realizing fully their responsibilities as wives and mothers.

The Union also help the women to understand the sacrament of baptism and the importance of teaching the Christian faith to their children. It was in October 1908 that the Mothers Union was founded in Nigeria by Mrs Abigail Oluwole.

Before the valedictory conference and enrollment event came to the end, the Women were charged to lead with grace and not with laws, and to bear in mind always that law has never saved anyone.
