OPEN LETTER: 2023 GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION: NDI ABIA, LET THE CELEBRATION STOP AT LEAST FOR NOW

Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, Governor Elect Abia State

The heading of this piece suggests to a large extent that this letter is addressed to Ndi Abia as a whole. If this is your understanding of the caption, I just hope that I have not disappointed you, and in view of this, seek your pardon in the event that you feel I have deceived you. With this appeal in mind, I now feel comfortable to flow in the manner represented below:

Dear Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, Governor-elect Abia State,

Let me join UmuAbia wherever they are, home and abroad to congratulate you on your election as the next Governor of Abia state. Let me also at this early stage, draw your attention to some of the things you must bear in mind as you are settling down for the obviously tasking assignment that you first of all volunteered for, before the endorsement of Ndi Abia, who through their votes and other actions supported you generously and overwhelmingly, before, during and after the election.

It is already glaring to all discerning minds that the result of the election in Abia state which favoured you, also incorporated and activated the process that saw you declared by the electoral umpire in Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the Governor-elect of Abia State. Come 29th May, 2023, you will be sworn in as the Governor of Abia State. This is not just a mere expectation and prayer of mine, but my belief and obviously the hope, prayer and wish also of your gallant and ardent followers in Abia State and beyond. Beyond these29th May, 2023, is a date that you are keeping with the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

 Once again, Congratulations!!

I found myself in a situation best described as quagmire. This occurred after trailing the support and followership that followed your campaign. I monitored quietly, as the whole process dovetailed straight into the Election Day and how the assembly of very loyal, willing and highly motivated, focused, target oriented and result driven Ndi Abia rooted and voted for you, with commitment and unquenchable desire to not only be noticed as mere participants, but ardent followers of their mission and proven achievers of set goal.

It was glaringly visible, and clearly in the open that Abians overwhelmingly and collectively advanced their interest and yours into a feverish state the very moment the result of Abia State gubernatorial election was announced and you were the winner, the entire state and everywhere that Ndi Abia were, went agog.

I was in a state of quagmire not because of the inability to celebrate when large numbers of Ndi Abia were celebrating. Far from that, I was in a quagmire, having noticed the continuous rise, swelling and growing list in the number of supporters that were gathering, starting from the very little number, to something very rapid and consistently increasing. It got to the point where I wondered if adequate arrangement has been made and provisions made on how to utilize this obvious pool of resource by your incoming government.

In the state of quagmire that I found myself, I reasoned that something extraordinary is required to be able to translate the positive energy that you have gathered and that your emergence as the next Governor of Abia State is attracting, and building into a highly glorifying pool of productive workforce and Networking mechanism for both private and public sectors growth and sustainable development.

On the strength of the above, let me therefore, call on you and all the Umu Abia, for a halt, a sort of punctuation in the flow of celebrations and instead, urge you and every other supporters and followers to deliberately switch and activate the “Can-do Spirit” that Umu Abia is reputed for, and in doing this, set their creative, innovative and wealth generation default pin, intentionally on “productivity mode and collective growth of the Abia economy.”

The idea is to commence immediately the building process of harnessing the known skills and ability of Umu Abia. To focus the minds of all and sundry to realize the urgent need to raise the structures that will enable the people to imbibe the core principles of pulling and pushing together, and to identify the means by which the positive old things can be executed and presented to the growing, competitive and highly demanding multifaceted and dynamic market environment for consistent exchange purposes and in a manner that is cherished, highly recognized and celebrated in new positive ways. In addition to all these, is the need to decipher how to take advantage of opportunities before they become obvious.

Dear Dr. Alex Otti, until the foregoing is embraced massively by your supporters and followers, and until there is a clear understanding of how important the contributions of individuals and groups are at every level: corporate or not; community and family units inclusive, rural and urban; and until Umu Abia, do not only know, but rather belief that their actions and inactions are fundamental in the attainment of any result that you (Dr. Alex Otti) will post at the end of your tenure, as the Governor of Abia State and commit by themselves, sincerely and decisively in raising the standard of governance and in building formidable and sustainability oriented and driven frameworks, it must be noted, without mincing words that, unnecessary and unduly extended celebration at this juncture is not only very expensive, but will mar the benefits derivable from the pool of human resource that you have graciously accumulated.

By extension, it will impede the successes expected of your administration, erode the trust and goodwill reposed on you, as well as, make it elusive the projected massive development of Abia, during your tenure.

Succinctly put for now, celebration is a luxury that Abia State cannot afford!

My position and the reason for it are very obvious... It is more edifying, suiting and alluring if celebrations, accolades and inspiring feelings will greet your exit after you are done with your tenure of office in Abia state.

I am a firm, unrepentant and unflinching believer in the fact that, the true, real and valid celebration, I mean, the main, the main celebration… the one that will gladden your heart the more and earn you the title: “His Excellency”, will occur not at the beginning, not as a promissory note, but at the level that the results are delivered and promises kept.

Nnabugwu Chizoba

Will be back…
