UNDERSTAND THE LAWS, THE POLICIES, AND MONITOR PERFORMANCE OF THE PUBLIC SECTOR INSTITUTIONS IN YOUR LINE OF ACTIVITY, MSMEs

MSMEs, in Nigeria, as a matter of fact, must imbibe the honoured culture of accessing and studying in detail relevant documents: the Laws that established relevant public institutions, and the policy instruments, that set out their specific mandates, and modus operandi.

Similarly, the MSMEs, as a group must put in place a functional and effective monitoring mechanism that will ensure the group understands not just the laws and policies, but how the institutions are run. They must ensure constant interface with the institutions and as of necessity, be on the same page with them, on all issues, of importance to the MSMEs. And If need be, raise observations, especially when they are short changed.

Demand for performance from MSMEs, on public sector institutions: Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), is a major role expectated of the MSMEs, but presently lacking.

Demand for performance from MSMEs, on public sector organizations, must be a constant and vigorously pursued agenda.

The MSMEs, must make Advocacy visits  to the MDAs, a regular and compulsory project. Such visits, should be efficiently deployed as engagement tool, and used sufficiently to canvass for improvement in policies and infrastructure.

Advocacy, should be considered by the MSMEs as inseparable instrument from their operations. The MSMEs must utilize it regularly as a major component of their activities. It is time, the MSMEs, embrace Advocacy, use it essentially to establish their relevance, and communicate their contributions and challenges, and also demand specific actions from the MDAs, and relevant private sector stakeholders.

Leveraging on the immense benefits that can accrue from their huge membership strength, contributions and geographical spread, the MSMEs, as an organic part of the society, and a very strong base of the economy, must begin to communicate in diverse ways, their role in the society. Equally, the MSMEs, must avail the public  hidden potential in them, and provide a reliable blueprint with capacity to enable them unveil such potential, their capacity, and inherent benefits to the public and by extension the economy.

The MSMEs, as a part of their duty, must fight unrelentingly to create opportunities to explain in detail, to the public what is harboured among the members that lack or limited resources has prevented them from achieving.

In view of the above, the expectations of the MSMEs from the public, in terms of the specific role they want interested parties from the public to play, such as investment, loan or grant request. These expectations must be chronicled and presented to the public as a proposal. It must be carefully packaged, with terms and conditions identified, attached and clearly communicated.

In line with achieving the objective of the above suggested, whatever the proposed return on investment is, it must be well articulated and widely communicated, in an attractive business oriented manner.
